Rosegale entertained Sunderland Hylton Castle Seniors in the third and final preliminary round of the Durham Sunday Cup looking to progress to the first round proper. The opening twenty minutes saw some good football played by both teams but both defences stood firm. The first real chance saw David Baker crack a 25 yard free kick onto the bar butt he rebound was cleared. The game swung from end to end and on 32 minutes a rasping shot from 22 yards by a Hylton Castle player grazed the top of the bar. Rosegale were caught out five minutes before the break when a long ball over the top was not dealt with and a forward nipped in to score the opening goal. Rosegale lost David Baker to injury just before the break and that was how the score remained up to half time. Rosegale started the second half brightly and were soon level when two minutes into the half Billy Gatenby robbed a defender advanced on goal then played in Danny Earl who scored from a tight angle. In the 53rd minute Stuart Newbold in the Rosegale goal pulled off a full length finger tip save to prevent them going behind. Minutes later and Shaun Hunnam played the ball down the right for Gatenby and his cross across goal was picked up by Earl who laid the ball back to Stewart Bath who volleyed home the second goal. After this Rosegale dominated the game but squandered a number of chances to put the game beyond the visitors but failed to take these. Rosegale started to play some neat and precise passing football that was good on the eye all that was missing was the goals. However two goals from Mark Lilley in the final five minutes gave the scorelline a more realistic look. The first saw Danny Earl break down the left and pulled the ball back for Lilley to slot home then on 90 minutes Earl broke down the right wing and cut inside then pulled the ball back for Lilley to tap home, the referee the blew for full time and a much deserved victory for Rosegale and a place in the first round proper of the Durham Sunday Cup.
This North Riding County Football Association County cup tie Crown and Anchor v South Bank in a competition that involves teams from as far as Scarborough & York was played on an open ground in Redcar strewn with debris without any changing facilities. It was top playing bottom and with it being the only game in the first division it was a great chance for the Sheraton to go four points clear, a win for Unicorn would take them off the bottom it was a big game for both teams, The Sheraton were without Marc Parry and Martin Slater who both had to good a time on Saturday night and couldn't make it, giving David Charnock and Carl Thompson a chance to get back in the team. The Sheraton were there nice and early and ready to go, starting well with their back line in control and comfortable, everything was a little rushed and nerves in midfield the ball was going forward a little too quick which was leaving Ash Hauxwell and Bri Cole isolated up front both had one on ones but couldn't find the target. Norton Unicorn had one chance all half Philip Dalby made a great run down the left to the bye line then ran towards goal under a tackle by Craig Allan he somehow picked out a Unicorn player who missed an open goal from six yards. The Sheraton were putting a lot of pressure on the Unicorn back four and had a number of corners but couldn't find the back of the net. The Sheraton had a great number of chances and were starting to think it just wasn't going to be their day. It took the Sheraton until injury time in the first half to break the dead lock it came from a Craig Allan corner which Ash Hauxwell headed home. Half time and the Sheraton were not happy with the number of chances they had missed but were over the moon with Unicorn only having one chance all half, the Sheraton wanted to up it in the second half and show Unicorn how good they can be. The Sheraton started well again and Lee Helliwell and Johnny Cooper were in good form in the centre of the field and the back four were more than comfortable and both forwards were still getting chances it was just looking like a matter of time before they started to go in, but in football if you don't take your chances you can be made to pay and a free kick which was crossed into the box then tapped past the out coming keeper by Scott Britton for 1-1. This brought Ash Hauxwell to life, he got on the end of a long ball took it to the bye line ran in towards goal past three defenders and blasted it in, Lee Helliwell was there to make sure, Johnny Cooper was then cut down and injured in the box Ash Hauxwell sent the keeper the wrong way making it 3-1 . The Sheraton made three changes bringing on Paul Ayre, Matty Holbrook and Mark Robinson all with a point to prove and all three need a lot more work with all three having chances to get their name on the team sheet but falling a little short Matty Holbrook hit a cross shot which Ash Hauxwell slid in to make it 4-1 but the score line doesn't show how one sided the game really was.
In Division Two Stockton West End maintained their 100% record in the league with a 3-0 win away to the Stockton Arms. West End started brightly with some good midfield football but they could not break down the Arms rearguard so did not trouble the goalie until the 15 minute when he fumbled at shot from Carl Gibbons to allow Graham Mulgrew to head in to make it 1-0. The game then turned sloppy with neither side been able to put a decent pass together and this is how it stayed until half time. In the second half West End began how they started the first half but they still were not able to find a second goal. The Arms made a couple of subs which allowed them to start play some good football but missing two one on one chances. Then in the 70th minute West End were awarded a free kick just outside the box that Mattie Martian drilled home. Then in the last minute Carl Gibbons made it 3 0 to wrap the points up for Stockton West End.
Also in Division Two The Eagle enjoyed a comfortable win against The Malleable running out 6 - 1 winners in this lively clash. The Sheraton were looking to win their game in hand over the Mandale and go top of the first division but first needed to beat the Sun Inn who are still unbeaten this season so far and who had beaten the Sheraton twice last season. The Sheraton were up for this one with a point to prove and started well giving the Sun Inn no time on the ball making it hard for them to settle into the game, The Sheraton were trying to get the ball over the top but with the pitch being tight there wasn't much room in behind Lee Helliwell and Johnny Cooper were working very hard in the centre of the park dictating the pace of the game, the Sheraton were in control of the game but couldn't get a clear sight of goal. With the size of the Sheraton's team, set plays were going to be very important, so when a long throw into the box by the dangerous Marc Parry caused havoc Liam Connor reacted fast and keeping his head coolly slotted the ball past Steven Gill in the Sun Inn goal. That got the Sheraton started and they started to get more and more chances a long cross field ball from Marc Parry found Ash Hauxwell on the edge of the box who chested it forward and volleyed past Ste Gill giving the Sun Inn keeper no chance again. The Sun Inn had a chance when the ball fell to the right winger Marlon Baleci who's shot was easy for the inform Danny Phillips. The Sheraton were on top all over the pitch left back Phil Purcifer hit a long ball up the line Ash Hauxwell got there, first keeping the ball in before a great ball through to Brian Cole who slid in at the back post to make it 3-0 and give the Sheraton the lead their hard work deserved with half time very close the Sheraton took their foot on the gas a little which let the Sun Inn have a bit more of the ball without hurting the Sheraton. Half time and for only the second time the Sheraton were ahead the manager asked for more of the same and not to let them in to the game at all, the Sun Inn made a change to try and get into the game.
The Sheraton started at a good tempo again and within five minutes could have had two more both from corners the first was a Marc Parry corner which Lee Helliwell headed cleanly but just over and the second from the other side was a Craig Allan corner which Marc Parry won and putting his free header just over. After giving away a needless free kick the Sheraton paid for their missed chances as the ball was chipped into the Sheraton box the ball bounced up off the ground and hit Marc Parry's hand giving the ref no choice but to award the penalty, Dave Edmonds stepped up and sent Danny Phillips the wrong way making it 3-1 and the next goal very important now but there was only going to be one team who got it after five minutes of Sun Inn pressure without making a clear chance Marc Parry worked the right wing well before putting a great cross into the back post were Ash Hauxwell head back across goal leaving Ste Gill rooted to the spot. The Sheraton then added another from a Marc Parry corner Martin Slater’s shot deflected off Liam Connor who was in the right place in front on the keeper to make it 1-5 to the Sheraton and with only 30 minutes ending any real hope of a come back the Sheraton then started to make changes first bringing David Charnock and then bringing Carl Thompson on to the left wing and he set up Martin Slater who found the bottom corner from distance to get his goal before making way for Mark Robinson, Carl then picked out Ash Hauxwell who turned his man and put his shot away in the bottom corner giving the man of the match his first league hat-trick this season. With ten minutes to go Carl Thompson got his name on the score sheet after a one, two with Ash Hauxwell. The Sheraton switched off the last ten minutes and let the Sun Inn play football and they worked it well to get two late goals both scored by Chris Whaley but there was only ever one team in the game and it takes the Sheraton to the top on the league. The Sheraton would like to say well done to referee Darren Walker who had a great game
