FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup

26/8/2010 2pm kick off (At Beechfield Ground Coxhoe)
Kelloe WMC 4 South Bank A.F.C 2
South Bank had the better of the early exchanges going close on a number of occasions with efforts from Davies and Laing on eight minutes Kelloe WMC countered when David Southern (Bedlington Terriers) hit the post. The clearance from Adam Livingstone found Harrison Davies his defence splitting pass found Paul Barker his volley ripping into the net rocking the strong Kelloe outfit. Kelloe tried to hit back a tremendous move involving Colin Iley (Billingham Synthonia), Gavin Barton (Consett) and Darren Kokes (Sunderland RCA) was blocked by Glen Corkain and Phillip King. South Bank were not overawed by the occasion and a great tackle by Mark Taylor on Keiran Megran (Consett) then his pass to Steven Barker saw a move involving Mitch Morris, Jamie May and Martin Laing put Harrison Davies clear his shot giving Kelloe keeper Carl Morris no chance 2-0. With Kelloe a little frustrated a number of challenges led to several free kicks to the Bank a nasty tackle on Mark Taylor led to a yellow card to a Kelloe player but on the stroke of half time David Southern pulled one back for Kelloe. HT 1-2.

The second half saw Kelloe come stronger with John Jury (Crook Town) and James Oates (Sunderland RCA) marshalling the no nonsense Kelloe defence to contain Martin Laing and Steven Barker. The Bank were holding firm until a dubious penalty when a Kelloe player going to ground near Paul Barker was harshly adjudged to have made contact with the player getting up smiling Glen Corkain was booked for for decent commenting on the decision. The penalty was despatched by Megran on 55 minutes 2-2. Glen Corkain twisted his ankle and was replaced by Jamie Clarke he soon was in the thick of the action with a timely tackle and a couple of headers as Kelloe stepped up the pressure. Paul Barker was struggling to carry on following a strong fair challenge by Alex Wilson (Esh Winning) he was replaced by Gary Owens his first pass to Harrison Davies almost brought a goal with a move involving Jamie May and Martin Laing with a great tackle on the edge of the Kelloe box by Graham Irving preventing a scoring chance for the Bank. Steven Barker pulled a muscle and was replaced by Ian Fairlamb with the Bank having to adjust the shape of the team. The game looked to be heading for extra time when Gavin Barton hit a screamer for Kelloe in the 85th minutes with Stephen Frost well beaten. The Bank rallied and countered with Laing and Davies linking with May his shot saved by Morris. In the 88th minute Kelloe hit a fourth through a strike by David Southern. This was the first time South Bank have entered this All England competition and Kelloe were the first to admit the North Riding County Cup holders South Bank gave them a run for their money in this crowd pleasing encounter that did the Stockton Sunday League proud.

Match Report 19 September 2010

The Sheraton 2 Mandale 1

Due to all the rain the pitch was in perfect condition for a game of football. Both team had key players missing the Sherry went for it from the kick off starting with a 3-5-2 and started the better team seeing a lot of the ball Ste Lonsdale thought he had scored when he had a shot cleared off the line after a goal mouth scramble, Dave Baker then hit the post after a cleared corner found him 25 yards out he hit it perfectly but seen it somehow stay out. 20 minutes in and the Mandale started to get into the game playing some good football Jamie Stone on the left wing was causing all sorts of problems for the Sheraton and helped create a few good chances the Mandale were now on top and got a goal before half time Jamie Stone ran down the left wing going past 2 Sherry defenders crosses the ball to find an unmarked Dave Mennell who side footed it past the helpless Danny Phillips. Half time and it was an even game but Mandale had taken their chance.

Second half started like the first did with the Sherry looking to get goals, Dave Baker saw another great shot come back off the post the Sherry could sense they were still in the game and were making good chances but couldn’t find a way past Ste Gill in the Mandale goal. Mandale players started to lose control and found themselves in the referee’s book one after another, the Sheraton made some changes in a bid to get goals and within minutes substitute Martin Slater found himself one on one with only Ste Gill to beat which he did 1-1 and 20 minutes to go. The Sherry were working hard and man of the Match Raymond Ayre was breaking things up and stopping the Mandale getting into the game, Mandale resorted to long range shots which Danny Phillips was equal to, Martin Slater added a second from a very tight angel to give the Sherry the lead. Mandale continued to get at the Referee and then had a player sent off. Minutes later Martin Slater went through one on one again but this time Ste Gill just took him out 25 yards from goal being last man he was lucky to stay on the pitch, Ste Gill made a few good saves before the game finished which went on forever the added 6 minutes injury time due to all the cards he had given out.

Durham Sunday Cup

The Sheraton started brightly in this Durham Sunday Cup preliminary round playing some good football Raymond Ayre looked shape up front with Tony Johnson, centre midfielder Lee O Connell in his first game this season after illness hit a 30 yard ball to right winger Martin Slater who found Ray Ayre, Ray Ayre ran through and placed the ball past Jamie Bowe in the Cowpen goal to get his first goal for the Sheraton this season 0-1 inside 10 minutes. The Sheraton took their foot off the peddle and were playing in first gear but showed some good spells Marc Parry was seeing a lot of the ball out on the left wing with both Marc parry and left back Craig Allan working well on the left side both looking dangerous going forward.

The second came from right winger Martin Slater again with a great through ball to Tony Johnson who poked it past Jamie Bowe for 0-2 the Sheraton weren't at their best but still looked like getting more. Tony Johnson made it 0-3 with a little help from Cowpen centre back Phil King. Cowpen got one back on the stroke off half time a mix up at the back gifted Andy Rowney a chance which he took well beating in form keeper Danny Phillips to make it 1-3 at half time. The Sheraton shuffled the team a little and moved Martin Slater up front and Ray to the wing the Sheraton continued to push forward leaving themselves open to a quick break, Tony Johnson then returned the favour for Martin Slater with Slater finding the back of the net meaning all three goal scorer’s got off the mark for the season. Jamie Bowe made some great saves to keep Cowpen in the game before the Cowpen had a ten minute spell of good pressure in which Andy Rowney added a great solo goal first beating Craig Allan then going past centre back Liam Connor then beating Danny Phillips for a second time, the game finished 2-4 to the Sheraton.

Hardwick maintained their 100% start to the season with a close fought win over newly promoted and potential league title rivals Mandale FC. Mandale gained the early advantage when after some pressure from Hardwick they broke away and Gary Bowe scored from close range. This spurred Hardwick on and an onslaught on the Mandale goal ensued with Simcox pulling off a string of fine saves in the Mandale goal. The pressure however paid off just before half-time when a miss-hit shot from Jamie Owens on the edge of the goal area eluded the Mandale keeper and found the bottom corner of the net. Mandale began the second half with the wind behind them and dominated possession for twenty minutes but found the Hardwick defence resolute in all positions. When they finally created an opening Darren White pulled out a superb full length save to thwart them. Hardwick gradually worked their way back into the game and were finally getting the better of the possession as the game continued. Then they got the all important winning goal. Tom Burke latched onto a through ball on the left hand side of the goal area, shrugged off the Mandale defender, sent in a low cross and a Mandale defender could only turn the ball into his own net. Hardwick managed to see the game out for the all important win.

In the Premier division Rosegale N&SA bounced back after a shaky start to the season, with a fine victory over a very useful South Bank side. Billy Gatenby was ask to fill the role of the Rosegale hit man Danny Earl (out injured) and he didn't disappoint, scoring for his team early on after pouncing on a goalkeeping miss kick and slotting in to a vacant net. Dean Bell added a second using his quick feet to escape the close attention of the Bank defenders before powering home. Gatenby was on hand again just before the break, rattling home a rebound off the keeper from his initial shot. South Bank started the second half the brighter and were rewarded with a fine header by at the back post following a corner kick. Bell sealed the game late on after bringing the ball down on his chest and volleying an unstoppable shot into the back of the net.
