Match Reports for 6 December 2009

In the first division The Sheraton entertained Londonderry Arms with both teams having ambitions of promotion this season, this was a big game for both teams and it was all even last time out, but both were looking for one better this time round. The game was kicked off on a heavy pitch but otherwise in great condition, Londonderry were up for this one and put the Sherry under pressure from the start not letting them settle into the game, Lee Helliwell had a long range shot saved by Andy Docherty in the Londonderry's goal and Ash Hauxwell headed over from close range off a Marc Parry corner. Londonderry looked dangerous upfront with two big strong players winning headers but not being able to get in behind the Sheraton back four, Lee Helliwell lost the ball in centre midfield after a number of tackles Lee was asking the referee for the free kick but the referee Kevin Blackburn didn't see it that way, the ball was played forward quickly and for the first time the Sheraton's back four was caught flat, Lee Bailey went through and finished the chance beaten the on rushing Danny Phillips in the Sheraton's goal. The Sheraton felt a little let down by the referee but got on with it, and upped their own game with Lee Helliwell and Lee Thomas playing some quick two touch football in the centre on the midfield was making more chances for the Sheraton, Lee Helliwell had a good volley saved by Andy Docherty again then lee Thomas saw a great shot just go wide of the post. Lee Helliwell and Lee Thomas linked up well and found Lee O Connell on the edge of the box he found a way in and finished giving Andy Docherty no chance this time 1-1. The Sheraton started to believe in themselves again and on the stroke of half time Lee Helliwell headed home Marc Parry's corner with a great header powering the ball past Andy Docherty and into the back of the net, Kevin Blackburn blew up for half time but the Sheraton didn't want the whistle to come after finishing the half so strong.

The second half started with Londonderry pushing hard to get back into the game, hitting the Sheraton's back line with a lot of long high balls free kicks, throw ins and corners but the Sheraton back four and Danny Phillips were up to the task at hand, Londonderry did have the ball in the back of the net after a goal mouth scramble but the referee had seen a hand ball so it didn't stand. The Sheraton were getting good breakaway and Ash Hauxwell just missed from a tight angle, Lee Thomas came close again hitting the outside of the post. Londonderry had a great chance when keeper Danny Phillips and centre back Richie Allan clashed and both we laid out on the ground, open goal but Ste Carson was there with a great last ditched tackle to keep the Sheraton in the lead, The Sheraton made some changes bringing on some fresh legs, and started playing some good football catching Londonderry Arms on the counter attack, and it was from a Londonderry Arms corner that the Sheraton sealed the three points a long ball up the field for Martin Slater to run on to finishing from a tight angle with his left foot. They was still 15 minutes to go and Londonderry had a lot the ball but the back line held up to the long throws and corners the Sheraton went on to see the game out and win 3-1 after a hard fight 90 minutes.

In the Ian Gorman Memorial Trophy third round tie third division Norton George & Dragon entertained first division Sun Inn at Norton School and it was the third division side that took honours with an emphatic 7-1 win over their opponents. Goals from Chris Burton (3), Terry Robinson, Scott Meehan, Gavin Simcox and Callum O’Sullivan whilst Steven Town replied for Sun Inn.

In division two Billingham The Kings entertained Malleable with the home side looking for points to move away from the bottom of the table. They had to settle for a share of the points in a 2-2 draw, a Ryan Walker goal and own goal for Billingham The Kings was cancelled out by Jeffrey Illingworth and Jamie Marin

In the Durham Sunday Cup Hardwick Social Club progressed to the third round following a hard fought 3-1 win over Tindale Crescent WMC at Tilery. The game was played mainly in the middle of the park with both sides striving to play some decent football, Hardwick Social Club took the lead in the first half and held this until half time. The second half was much the same but a defensive mistake allowed the visitors to draw level however their joy did not last long when minutes later from a corner Wayne Osbourne powered home a header to restore the lead. Jamie Owens wrapped up the tie with a solo goal he jinked his way through the visitors defence before drilling through the keepers legs.
